What I’ve been up to this week…

I figured, to help me keep track of my watching, reading and gaming, I’d make myself a list of sorts. I’ll start the list on a Monday, but it won’t be published till Sunday, so I can edit all new things in till then.  So anyways, on to what I’ve been doing during the 3rd week of June 2011…

Anime

  • GetBackers, complete. => Been meaning to start watching this for years now; blame the Wolseley High School librarian at the time, Miss Bevan.  She introduced us to a great many wonderful anime… Ban Midou is my favourite character thus far.  I tend to dig the dark-haired serious type over the blonde jolly type.  Bonus points for glasses. Speaking of dark-haired and serious though… so is Dr. Jackal, lmao. I can safely say that, by the end of the show, Akabane/Jackal IS my favourite character of the show, that brilliant bastard.  Although I have to admit there were a lot of likable and unique ones in this show.
  • Hellsing, complete. => I’ve been meaning to watch this for a while now.  Always happened to catch bits and pieces of it, but now I finally went through them all.  Gotta love that badass Alucard.  Pondering on doing “Ultimate” and the OVA next.  Oh, and of course, reading it in all its epic glory.  I don’t think I need to add anything at this point.
  •  Okane ga Nai, complete. Yaoi. => I’m not sure how to rate this one.  I definitely lol’d a lot at Kanou’s badassery, but… rape is not okay, obviously… and although there is, at least partially, a different take on it… yeah, touchy subject.  I like the show, but there’s also parts I don’t like. Pondering to read up on this, since there’s only 4 episodes, and the manga seems more in-depth.  In case you’re wondering why I picked this up: I saw someone use a couple scenes in an AMV and got curious, and 4 episodes don’t take long to get into.  But damn if Ayase isn’t the uke-est uke ever… to a point where it pisses me off sometimes ^^;
  • To Aru Majutsu No Index, Season 1 => Started watching it after reading some summaries as to the content.  I was more or less forcing myself at first, but eventually, I really got into it. Science vs. Religion, lol.  I find it refreshingly without too many cliches.  I mean, of course there’s some, but it’s definitely not relying on any, or turning them into something new.  I’m not sure what to say without going into the plot too much… Favourite character would be… hm… going by my usual preferences, the red-headed magician of fire, Stiyl Magnus (who reminds me of Cross Marian from D. Gray-man…).  But there’s definitely a lot of interest-sparking characters.  I’ll see what Season 2 has to offer before I decide for sure XD

Games

  • Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn (Wii) => I remember being somewhere in the middle of arc 3, so I figured, why not pick it up again.  Much to my dismay, there was no save file of this game on my Wii.  And that’s when I remembered I had been playing this game on my hosts’ Wii, and the save file was non-transferable (believe me, I tried, but I never did bother converting a Jap save into US save).  So anyways, this meant I had to start all over again.  not that it bothered me much; I seem rather addicted to new beginnings, in particular when I have not been playing a game in a long time… I guess I just love tutorial stages and such. XD Ha, and Sothe is so much more awesome than he was in the previous game.  On that note, pity I can’t use the GCN save file from said game with this one, as my save is EU, not US.  Oh well… Started on Normal difficulty this time though, since I pretty much know all that’s old and new about the game mechanics now.
  • Pokemon Battle Revolution (Wii) => I’m still a tad disappointed over the lack of a story mode and/or a way to gain experience in PBR, but the dress-up makes up for it. A little.  And I mean, there’s no doubt that the animation of Pokemon and attacks has improved.  But my enthusiasm has been on steady decline ever since beating everyone and unlocking/buying everything, lol.  Unlike before, I don’t do a lot of coliseum marches anymore.  Even with 6 or 7 different battle passes, it gets a tad mono after a while.  Now if they could combine the innovation of this game with the epicness of its GCN predecessors, THAT would be extremely epic.  And of course I’m secretly hoping to see the handheld games on the Wii (or whatever comes next) in 3D surroundings… though I guess the DS is getting close and all.  One thing about PBR I am quite sour over is how they go about the shiny leader costumes; first of all, I didn’t know there was such a thing for ages.  And then I found out you can only get them if you didn’t already get the regular ones.  Seriously, wtf.
  • Sengoku Basara – Samurai Heroes (Wii) => Never getting tired of the opening sequence, especially now that I have a spiffy flatscreen to watch it on.  Also never getting tired of mowing down masses of stupid AI warriors XD  I like that I don’t have to memories some 12-button combos for this game.  Nice and simple.  Heck, I had so much fun playing it with Keira, and she was good too… at times it was hard to believe she was only 5 years old and kicking so much samurai butt ;)

Manga

  • Ludwig Revolution, complete.  => Ah, I always loved Kaori Yuki’s works.  Years ago I got the first volume of this, but back then it looked like it was only a one-shot.  Much to my surprise, I found that it had reached a grand total of 4 volumes by now, so I knew I had to get the other 3 as well.  And this week, I ordered them at amazon, and finally got to see how the story of our boob-loving prince comes to end.  Lots of surprises here, no doubt, and I love the many twists on the Grimm Brothers’ fairy tales.  Being German, I obviously grew up with those :P Gotta say though, I’ve read Cruel Fairytales by the same author before, and thus I was downright expecting to see some mind-boggling turns for those children’s classics. XD

Movies

  • The Human Centipede - First Sequence (Horror) => Subtle creepiness indeed.  I hear the second part will be banned in the UK, so chances are, in Germany too.  I mean, our “protective” censorship turned the Godfather into an abomination, so… I have no idea if this movie even made it past the radar, but I won’t bother with a German version anyways.  So, about the movie… I think the true shocker really lies more in the ethics department than in what you actually see.  The title gives you an idea of what’s going on, and though our evil Dr. Heiter (quite the ironic name) doesn’t exactly have a fleshed out motif, I don’t think that this does any harm to the film; it rather plays out well.  If you had enough mental scarring regarding the mental abyss that is the human mind, this movie isn’t much of a scare for you.  That’s not to say it was boring.  But I do think only certain kinds of audiences can appreciate the movie for what it is.  I hope I don’t have to tell you now that I am an advocate for human centipedes and maniac surgeons.  ’cause you know, I’m not.
